Hypnosis for Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common conditions for which hypnosis is successfully used. Anxiety is a result of many factors, both physical and psychological, but control of anxiety always resides in the mind, more precisely, in the subconscious. Hypnosis can tap into the subconscious and remove the triggers for anxiety, or remove the associations between triggers and anxiety.

‘Anxiety’ is a general term and encompasses many types of conditions which all result in anxiety symptoms, all of which can be treated with hypnosis. These types include: general anxiety disorder; panic disorder; phobias (anxiety is triggered by a very specific situation and cause the person to try to avoid that situation at all costs. Phobias can be incapacitating); posttraumatic stress disorders, which arise following an accident or any other traumatic event; obsessive compulsive disorders, which generally stem by an irresistible urge to perform certain actions; adjustment disorders; and mixed syndrome disorders.

There are many ways by which hypnosis can cure anxiety. For example, a person may be hypnotized and put in a relaxed state, and then the subconscious is instructed to remember and replicate that state when a trigger for anxiety is encountered. In this case, the hypnotist will go to great lengths to deeply relax the subject, using words, imagery and a soothing tone of voice.

The counting method is often used in anxiety hypnosis. In essence, this involves a slow counting of 1 to 20, with the relaxation becoming more profound with each count. This may be coupled with imagery, and for each count, the hypnotist will intensify the level of detail of the imagery conjured. In addition, the hypnotist will instruct the person to focus on different muscles in turn, and relax them in a stepwise fashion. For this part, touch is sometimes used to help the person focus on that particular muscle group.

Hypnosis for phobia-induced anxiety is a specialized type of hypnosis which is gaining widespread popularity because of its effectiveness. In this type of hypnosis, the hypnotist will typically dissociate the object of the phobia with the negative emotions attached to it by the subconscious, and instead build neutral or positive association. It is not uncommon for persons who have a phobia for spiders to end up keeping tarantulas as pets after a single session of phobia hypnosis! Hypnosis will put you in control of your emotions, and will rationalize your fears making you realize that your phobias were based on illogical or nonrational thought processes. This will free you of your phobias permanently.
